Choosing Your Protein Powder

If you're on the hunt for some protein powder, read on for some tips on making the right choice.
First things first: Eat whole foods whenever possible. If you're able to get in your daily intake of protein with real, whole foods, you do not need protein powder. Protein powder is a supplement, which means it should not be a replacement for food.
However, some people struggle to eat enough protein with whole foods. Vegetarians and vegans especially can struggle with this, as do busy people who need something quick and on-the-go. Protein powder can be great if you're struggling to hit your protein needs with "real" food.
When you're choosing a protein powder, take some time to do a little research. There aren't many regulations around what supplement companies can claim on their labels and you may have heard of some issues with protein powders containing heavy metals. According to the NSF, "Given the fast pace at which many dietary supplements enter the marketplace and reports that suggest that some of these products do not actually contain the ingredients or quantities shown on the label, consumers have cause to be concerned. With such a confusing array of information out there, it can be difficult to determine which manufacturers’ products are credible." Luckily, there are some third-party testing companies out there that can help you determine if the protein powder you're looking at is safe and, in some cases, if it is effective.
I personally use Labdoor to look up information on any supplement I choose to use or recommend to clients. They use a great scoring system that shows the efficacy as well as the safety of the product. NSF is another organization that certifies and tests supplements to ensure their safety. If you're in the sporting world, it's important to look for products that are NSF Sport Certified so you can ensure there are no banned substances in your supplements.
